Sports Vision Training for Softball
Making the roster means showing coaches you can handle live pitching and quick plays at the corners. Sports vision training helps middle and high school players read the pitch earlier and react with confidence.
Why it matters
Why vision matters when you're trying to make the team
Passing a school eye screening only means your child can read a still chart. Softball is played in motion, under pressure, and coaches at tryouts notice the athletes who see the play first. Visual skills are still developing in the middle and high school years, which makes this a great time to train them.
Read the pitch earlier
Pick up rise balls, drops and change-ups out of the windmill instead of guessing.
Quick hands at close range
Corners and pitchers have a split second on hard-hit balls, and tryouts test that.
Confidence in the box
Seeing the ball clearly makes it easier to commit to good pitches.
Core visual skills
The visual skills softball demands
A routine eye exam rarely measures these. Our sports vision testing does.
Dynamic visual acuity
Seeing the spin on a rise or drop ball as it moves.
Eye tracking
Following a pitch that starts low and rises from the windmill release.
Depth perception
Judging pitch location, fly ball distance and swing timing.
Reaction time
Handling comebackers and hot shots at the corners.
Contrast sensitivity
Picking up the yellow ball against sky, grass and lights.
Peripheral awareness
Tracking runners and slappers while staying on the ball.
Know your role
Visual demands by position
Batters
Recognize pitch type out of the windmill and commit in a split second.
Slappers
Track the pitch while moving through the box and read the infield.
Pitchers
Hold a precise visual target and react to balls hit back up the middle.
Catchers
Track pitches with late movement and watch runners on base.
Corner infielders
React to hard-hit balls from short range.
Outfielders
Judge the ball off the bat and read its flight early.

What we work toward
From the training room to tryouts
Every program is built around your athlete's evaluation results, position and season. For middle and high school softball players, training targets:
- Earlier reads on rise, drop and change-up
- More consistent contact against faster pitching
- Quicker reactions at the corners and in the circle
- More confidence at tryouts and in games

Questions
Softball vision training FAQ
My daughter is moving up to faster pitching. Can vision training help?
Moving up means less time to read every pitch. Training builds the tracking and reaction skills that make the jump feel less overwhelming, and the evaluation first checks for any vision problem getting in the way.
Will this help my child make the team?
No program can promise a roster spot. What training can do is build the visual skills coaches look for at tryouts: reading the play early, reacting quickly and staying focused under pressure. Many athletes also feel more confident when the ball is simply easier to see.
What ages do you work with?
Our sports vision program is built for middle and high school athletes, from players trying out for their first school team to varsity players fighting for more playing time. Every program fits the athlete's sport, position and season.
How do we get started?
Start with the free Sports Symptom Checklist, then request an evaluation. Every athlete begins with a Binocular Vision Evaluation with Dr. Toler ($295), followed by a consultation to review the findings. It shows how the eyes are aligning, teaming, focusing and tracking, so training is built on real results instead of guesses.
Can vision affect schoolwork too?
Often, yes. The same eye teaming, focusing and tracking skills that matter on the field also matter for reading and homework. The evaluation looks at both, and Dr. Toler will tell you if anything affecting the classroom shows up.
Does sports vision training replace a regular eye exam?
No. Training works alongside routine eye care. Athletes should keep up with their annual comprehensive eye exam for eye health and prescription updates.
Can we use FES-UA scholarship funds?
Yes. Performance Vision Training is eligible for Florida Empowerment Scholarship (FES-UA) funds. Our program is designed to train the visual skills used in reading, like eye teaming, focusing and tracking, to help our student athletes stay academically eligible to play. Our team is happy to answer questions about using your benefits.
