Sports Vision Training for Soccer
Coaches look for players who know what to do before the ball arrives. Sports vision training helps middle and high school players scan, see the field and make quicker decisions under pressure.
Why it matters
Why vision matters when you're trying to make the team
Passing a school eye screening only means your child can read a still chart. Soccer is played in motion, under pressure, and coaches at tryouts notice the athletes who see the play first. Visual skills are still developing in the middle and high school years, which makes this a great time to train them.
Scan more, see more
Take in teammates, defenders and space before the ball arrives, the habit coaches look for.
A cleaner first touch
Judge the pace and flight of the ball more accurately.
Calmer under pressure
Find the right pass instead of panicking when defenders close in.
Core visual skills
The visual skills soccer demands
A routine eye exam rarely measures these. Our sports vision testing does.
Peripheral vision
Seeing teammates and pressure without turning your head.
Multiple object tracking
Keeping track of runners on and off the ball.
Depth perception
Judging driven balls, crosses and the timing of headers.
Dynamic visual acuity
Seeing the ball clearly while sprinting.
Reaction time
Responding to deflections, saves and turnovers.
Visual concentration
Staying sharp late in the match when fatigue sets in.
Know your role
Visual demands by position
Goalkeepers
Track shots through traffic and judge crosses into the box.
Center backs
Track attackers' runs while reading the ball carrier.
Fullbacks
Watch the winger and the space behind them at the same time.
Midfielders
Scan constantly to know the next pass before the ball arrives.
Wingers
Read the fullback and pick out teammates in the box.
Strikers
Read the keeper and find space in a crowded penalty area.

Questions
Soccer vision training FAQ
Can training help goalkeepers specifically?
Yes. Goalkeepers lean heavily on reaction time, tracking shots through traffic and judging the depth of crosses, and those are trainable skills.
Will this help my child make the team?
No program can promise a roster spot. What training can do is build the visual skills coaches look for at tryouts: reading the play early, reacting quickly and staying focused under pressure. Many athletes also feel more confident when the ball is simply easier to see.
What ages do you work with?
Our sports vision program is built for middle and high school athletes, from players trying out for their first school team to varsity players fighting for more playing time. Every program fits the athlete's sport, position and season.
How do we get started?
Start with the free Sports Symptom Checklist, then request an evaluation. Every athlete begins with a Binocular Vision Evaluation with Dr. Toler ($295), followed by a consultation to review the findings. It shows how the eyes are aligning, teaming, focusing and tracking, so training is built on real results instead of guesses.
Can vision affect schoolwork too?
Often, yes. The same eye teaming, focusing and tracking skills that matter on the field also matter for reading and homework. The evaluation looks at both, and Dr. Toler will tell you if anything affecting the classroom shows up.
Does sports vision training replace a regular eye exam?
No. Training works alongside routine eye care. Athletes should keep up with their annual comprehensive eye exam for eye health and prescription updates.
Can we use FES-UA scholarship funds?
Yes. Performance Vision Training is eligible for Florida Empowerment Scholarship (FES-UA) funds. Our program is designed to train the visual skills used in reading, like eye teaming, focusing and tracking, to help our student athletes stay academically eligible to play. Our team is happy to answer questions about using your benefits.
