My Child Avoids Homework and Can't Sit Still. Could It Be Their Eyes?

Every night it's the same: your child stalls, wiggles, gets up five times, and melts down before the worksheet is half done. You've tried timers, rewards, and quiet workspaces. Nothing sticks.

There are many possible reasons for homework struggles, including attention, learning differences, anxiety, and plain fatigue. One that's often overlooked is vision.

Notice when the struggle happens

Ask yourself:

  • Is it mainly during reading and writing, or during everything?

  • Can your child focus on building, drawing, sports, or games for long stretches?

  • Does the struggle get worse the longer they read, or later in the evening?

  • Is it better on weekends and over breaks?

If the trouble centers on close work and eases with rest, vision is worth checking.

Listen for physical complaints

Children with vision problems often say things like:

  • "My eyes hurt" or "My head hurts"

  • "The words are blurry" or "moving"

  • "I can't find my place"

  • "I'm tired" right after starting to read

Some kids never complain. Watch for eye rubbing, squinting, covering one eye, or putting their head down on the desk.

What a vision evaluation checks

A binocular vision evaluation tests eye teaming, focusing, and eye tracking at reading distance, the skills homework demands. These aren't usually tested in a school screening.

If vision isn't the answer

If your child's vision checks out fine, that's useful information too. It helps you and your pediatrician focus on other possible causes, including attention or learning evaluations.
